IMPHAL, Aug 30: On the occasion of the 26th International Day of the Disappeared, Families of Involuntary Disappeared Association, Manipur (FIDAM) conveyed its solidarity to families in Asia who have had to go through the terrible fate of a loved one disappearing after arrest.
In a statement, FIDAM said the phenomena of the "disappeared" have been occurring in Manipur since the imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 in the name of suppressing the rights to self determination movement in Manipur.
The hills experienced it since the early 50s and the phenomena reached the central valley of Manipur since 1980.
It further said that some family of disappeared have approached the High Court for habeas corpus petition since 1980.
In many of these cases the High Court granted interim compensation, however none of the perpetrators has ever been convicted till date, FIDAM statement said adding government of India has not ratified the International Convention for Protection the of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, 2006.
On the occasion of the International Day of the Disappeared, FIDAM urged the international community through Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearance and United Nations working group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances to pressurize Government of India to be a signatory.
