Workshop calls for more power for women

IMPHAL, Nov 15: The Manipur State Commission for Women, inaugurated a 4 Day Workshop for Capacity Building for the Empowerment of Women this evening at Women and Children Development Ashram Changangei, Ucheckon, Imphal.

The workshop was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women`s, Chairperson Dr. K.M. Ramathal who was also the chief guest of the function and presided by N. Binoy, President Senior Citizens` for Society.

During the function Dr. K.M. Ramathal noted that the role of women to be played in the society are crucial and people should respect women or else empowerment of women will never be achieved.

Today women have given immense contributions be it in economic development of the country or state and many other matters, she said.

However, women are being assaulted and harassed continually. They also face discrimination till today, she said.

In order that equal rights for women becomes a reality the women should get proper education first, Dr. Ramathal said.

She further said that education will also play a vital role in the life of every woman, though the Manipur women are not facing much issues of dowry, in many other states women are victims of dowry harassment and even deaths.

Therefore, a proper education for women is vital, she said.

Women should also be made to participate in decision making of the society and the reservation of women should be implementing in the state and the people should know the potentiality of the women, she added.

N. Bijoy who presided over the function also said that denying and neglecting the women`s ideas during the decision making of society is very well known. Women should be have equal rights as men, he added.

He further asserted that it is very unfortunate for the state that today no women of the state has been able to represent Manipur in the Parliament.

However, women`s courage and strength should be recognized by the society and bravery of women is visible everywhere in the state.

Irom Chanu Sharmila who is also identified as "Iron Lady" is the big example, he said.

MSCW, Chairperson Dr. Ch. Jamini during the opening function also stressed on women empowerment related issues and maintained that women should get education and sufficient amount of awareness for how to play important roles in the society.

Harassments and tortures of women should not be tolerated at any cost and instead they should be encouraged to participate in social activities, he said.

At present women contribution of women to society is clearly very big and they should be given respect in order to that peace and harmony is maintained.
