Manipur NGOs give Ibobi 10 days to find murderers
Imphal, Dec. 16 : Women organisations in Manipur are up in arms against the killing of two women in quick succession by unidentified men this month in Manipur’s Churachandpur district.
The body of an unidentified woman was recovered without any clothes from a paddy field on the outskirts of Churachandpur town on Monday. It is suspected that she was raped before being murdered.
The killing took place on the last day of the International Fortnight Observance Protesting Violence against Women organised in various parts of the state, including Churachandpur, jointly by various NGOs.
On the day of the opening of the programmes on November 25, another woman, identified as F. Thangmawii, 50, was found murdered near her official quarters at Tuibuang, also on the outskirts of Churachandpur district.
Thangmawii was a cashier at the office of the deputy commissioner of Churachandpur district.
No one, however, was arrested in connection with the two murder cases.
“We are giving the government 10 days to identify and arrest the culprits. If the government fails, we will agitate,” Linda Joshi, spokesman for Women Action for Development, said.
Conflict Women’s Forum, Manipur, also condemned the incident and said it would extend full co-operation in the movement against such heinous crimes against women. The Women Action for Development will hold a protest rally within a week in support of the demand for punishment of the culprits.
“We are mobilising support. We are not going to take the matter lying down. It is very unfortunate that such grisly crimes were committed during the protest fortnight,” N. Chandrakala, convener of Imphal West committee of Conflict Women’s Forum, Manipur, said.
Women activists also flayed the manner in which the police took away the nude body of a woman, without the presence of any women police personnel.
