Teachers' stir: Students lock Manipur schools

IMPHAL: Students in Manipur affected by an ongoing agitation of teachers have started locking government schools in the capital seeking resumption of classes.

Demanding implementation of the Sixth Central Pay Commission, government school teachers under the aegis of Council of Teachers' Association (Cota) are on a fast-unto-death in Imphal since January 19.

Over 120 of them have been arrested by police on charges of attempt to commit suicide and subsequently the court remanded them in judicial custody giving a severe blow to the academic atmosphere.

The students, as part of their agitation, have begun locking some prominent schools in Imphal, including Churachand Higher Secondary School and Tamphasana Girls' Higher Secondary School.

On Saturday, the angry students thronged the gates of the high-security Raj Bhavan and chief minister's bungalow in the heart of Imphal and shouted slogans. Some of them even threw their textbooks at the Governor's House.
