Four smugglers arrested with red sandalwood of 15.95 tons

Siliguri, Jul 16 : Four notorious sandalwood smugglers of an international gang were arrested with contraband goods worth nearly Rs two crore while transporting it to China, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence sources today said.

The DRI said the four, identified as Rahul Jaiswal of Delhi, Md Mahmoud, Md Kurban and Md Quorban, were arrested while transporting about 15.95 tons of red sandalwood in two trucks from Bijlimari tea garden area near here last night.

The DRI said the contraband goods were imported from Andhra Pradesh via Delhi on way to Manipur for final dispatch to neighbouring China.

The DRI believes the sandalwood smugglers have made a hub in Delhi for storage before shipment of contrabands to the foreign countries and use Siliguri as corridor.

All four were today sent to a local court for police remand.

The DRI said all four were members of a notorious smuggling gang, which operates in India and abroad.
