Imphal, Feb 5 : The United Committee, Manipur (UCM) today demanded that the Centre clear its stand on setting up designated camps in Manipur by the cadres of the Isak-Muivah faction of the NSCN.
UCM president K. Lanngamba raised this demand in a memorandum submitted to Union home minister P. Chidambaram during his visit to Imphal yesterday.
The committee is spearheading the campaign against the NSCN (I-M)’s demand for the creation of a Greater Nagaland by bringing all the Naga-inhabited areas, including the four Naga-dominated districts of Manipur, under one administrative unit. It warned that if the Centre did not take a clear stand against setting up of camps by the outfit, Manipur could face unrest.
The committee sought the Centre’s stand in view of the recent standoff between the Assam Rifles and the NSCN (I-M) cadres at Siroy village in Ukhrul district of Manipur.
Stating that the committee wanted a peaceful solution to the Naga issue, Lanngamba said that there would be no comprise on territorial integrity of Manipur and unity of ethnic communities living in the state.
The UCM reminded the Centre of the uprising in Manipur in June 2001 against the extension of the NSCN (I-M) ceasefire to the state by the NDA government.
