IMPHAl, Oct 20: Irate government teachers under the ZEO, Zone-II of the State Education Department ransacked the office of ZEO, Zone-II at Porompat under Imphal East district police station this morning following the failures of concerned officer to keep commitments to disperse overdue salaries of teachers under ZEO, Zone-II for July to October for the current year.
The incident occurred at the office complex of ZEO, Zone-II Porompat Imphal East as several hundreds of teachers under the ZEO, Zone-II turned up to collect their overdue salaries from the office at around 11am.
When they were met with unclear responses from the ZEO office, the teachers turned violent against the staff present at the ZEO office. But the teachers brought out all the furniture from inside the ZEO office and set them on fire outside the office complex.
In the meantime, further damages of office properties were prevented after the arrival of a police team from Porompat PS. The agitating teachers were then forcibly dispersed from the office complex by the police.
In connection with the incident, one of the senior government teachers under, ZEO, Zone-II disclosed to mediapersons present on the spot that the teachers initially had no intentions of causing damage to the office of their own ZEO at Porompat today.
He said the violence by the teachers were provoked and invited by the failure to keep commitments given by the concerned officers to clear their long overdue salaries for July to October. The failure again to meet the Nignol Chakouba festival deadline was the last straw and the tempers of the teaachers snapped, he said. The spokesman further mentioned that the teachers were repeatedly betrayed.
