IMPHAL, Jan 30 : A public meeting held today at Phayeng in connection with the killing of Chanbi and her teenage daughter Menaka strongly condemned state government’s inaction in delivering justice to the double rape and murder case.
Today’s public meeting was held at Phayeng Sorok Leikai admist protest-sit-in staged by Phayeng locals in demand for justice to the gruesome incident.
The public meet later resolved to launch democratic forms of agitation with immediate effect as the government has failed to provide slightest clue to the double rape and murder case despite giving assurance to deliver justice within January 26.
In the meantime, apex civil society organizations like AMUCO, UCM and Women Action for Development have decided to extend support to any agitation launched in connection with the incident.
Speaking at the public meet, a spokesperson of the JAC formed in connection with the double rape and murder case said dead bodies of the mother-daughter duo were claimed by the JAC and family members following an assurance given by government to deliver justice within a short period. However, government remains adamant so far and there has been no significant development towards finding even the slightest clue to the gruesome incident.
Despite the numerous appeal no group has so far claimed or clarify about the incident, the JAC spokesperson said and expressed concern whether the heinous crime was carried out by some vested interest to create panic amongst general public.
Representatives of the Women Action for Development, All Manipur United Clubs Organisation and United Committee Manipur also took part in the meet.
Speaking at the public meet, secretary of the WAD Sobita Mangsatabam expressed strong concern over increasing crime against women and children despite the mass campaign being launched in different parts of the state to reduce such crime. Recalling some of the recent crimes committed against women and children, Sobita observed that the increasing nature of such crime is due to state government’s negligence towards instituting a firm policy on the issue. She also asked as to why a democratically set up government in Manipur could not protect lives of women and children. She also called upon people to work collectively towards eliminating criminals.
Speaking at the public meet, AMUCO vice-president KT Rahman, while recalling numerous incidents of crime against women and children, maintained that Manipur has become a land of criminals. Stating general public are still in the dark about the Phayeng double rape and murder case, the AMUCO leader demanded clarification from individual/group whoever involved in the crime.
In the meantime, local MLA has expressed strong concern over the manner in which state government remain silent on the double rape and murder case.
