Ten Manipuri films in 11th Mumbai film fest

Imphal, February 02 2010: Ten films from Manipur will be screened in the weeklong Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Film Division sponsored 11th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) beginning at India's commercial capital Mumbai from tomorrow.

The five films including filmmaker Khwairakpam Bishwamitra's documentary 'Boiling Blood', Bobby Wahengbam's documentary 'Roshni', Subhash E's short film 'The Sun is not still Setting', Chaoba Thiyam's short film "Eye of an I" and Bhumenjoy Konsam's animation film "Tiger Head" will be screened in the competition section.

Another five including Oken Amakcham's 'Ratan Thiyam-the man of theatre', Haobam Ronel's 'My story', Haobam Paban Kumar's ' Mr India', Romi meitei's 'Cease Baby's whimpering cry" and A Priyobarta's film 'Pung-the rhythm of paradise' will be screened in the non-competition and north east section of the festival to be held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Nariman Point, Mumbai from February 3 to 9 .

A total of 64 films were selected in the competition section while 43 films for non-competition section of MIFF, which is one of the world's best and largest documentary film festivals.

This year the fest received a record 864 entries from 37 countries.

The young independent film Director Chaoba Thiyam who directed the short film 'Eye of an I' which is scheduled to be screened at the fest sharing his thoughts and ideas said, "my film is visual poetry of the ongoing situation".

"In my film, I'm trying to show the chaotic situation of the region", young director Chaoba, in a recent chat, said, "but we need a hero to overcome this anguish".

In his so called short film or composition of experimental shots, Chaoba tries to search a hero through a lone rider with or without any cinematic language.

Chaoba who had directed another documentary film 'Gwangju prize for Human Rights: Irom Sharmila 2007' is currently working as a video editor of NE TV Manipur Bureau.

He was the cameraman and editor of a film Real, which is now in the archive of Museum of Modern Art in New York.

According to BM Sunzu, Executive producer of the 15 minute-short film, it took one complete year to make the 'Eye of an I' as it visualizes Manipur differently.

Saikhom Ratan or Bungobi among his near and dear ones is the cameraman of the film.

Mention may be made that in the 56th National Film Awards for 2008, six International award winning film 'AFSPA 1958' was adjudged the best non-feature film while another film Shingnaba(Challenge) won the best adventure/sport film award.

Manipur's noted film critic RK Bidur also bagged the best critic award while a young mass communication teacher Elangbam Natasha won best narration award in another Manipuri film Sanakeithel (Royal Market).

The President of India will present the awards consisting gold medals and cash prizes in March 2010 .
