Dimapur, February 16 : The 13 Assam Rifles (AR), known as “Thundering Thirteen”, celebrated its 52nd Raising Day today, February 15.The AR in a press release claimed that the battalion has rendered “invaluable service in guarding North East frontiers, maintaining internal security and carrying out various civic action programmes” for the welfare of the people in the remote parts of North East during the past 52 years.
It also stated that the battalion was raised at Gaya (Bihar) on February 15, 1958. After the initial training, the battalion was deployed at Ghaspani (Nagaland) in March 1959 and then later served at Dimapur, Mon in Nagaland and Ukhrul in Manipur before its current deployment at Chieswema.
The AR added in the note that the “eventful and glorious history of 13 Assam Rifles is replete with heroic actions in Counter Insurgency Operations in Nagaland and Manipur”. It claimed that the “unit carried out various MCA projects for the betterment of the people” of the state.
“It continues to enjoy the confidence bestowed by the hill people for their work and has identified itself with the locals by helping them in their progress in true spirit of “Friends of the Hill people. In a span of half a century, the unit has excelled in all professional spheres and has earned a plethora of accolades and decorations evolving itself into an elite force responding to all challenges with élan,” the note stated.
