Imphal, April 14 : Residents of Ghari in Imphal West district of Manipur today decided to expel the families of three youths for attacking another youth of the village last week. The decision was taken this afternoon after the victim, Wahengbam Chiranjit, 21, died in Shija Hospital at Langol this morning.
Three youths, identified as S. Ithoi, 20, Th. Biren, 21, and P. Bishorjit, 21, all residents of Ghari, assaulted Chiranjit while he was returning home with a friend after attending a function in the neighbourhood on Thursday night.
Police said the assault was the outcome of an argument between the victim and the youths earlier in the day. Villagers said Chiranjit had intervened when two groups of youths, one of them having the three youths, were about to clash. The three were apparently waiting near the village for him to return.
The three youths surrendered to the police while their families fled the village on Friday morning. A case has been registered against the three at Lamphel police station and they are now in police custody. Villagers said their families were hiding at relatives’ places. After receiving information of Chiranjit’s death, the residents of Ghari gathered at the local playground this afternoon. They demanded punishment to the three youths and decided to expel their families from the village.
