Debt relief urged for state farmers

IMPHAL, Feb 13 : The All Manipur JAC for Scheme of Debt Waiver and Debt Relief for Farmers has appealed to the Manipur government to exempt the loans of loanee members of the JAC on or before February 17, 2009.

Speaking to the media at a press conference held today at the Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, L Meghachandra Moirang, advisor of the JAC expressed that the Central government had sanctioned a large amount for the loan waiver but the state government had not given the said amount for loan waiver of their member loanees and their loans had not been exempted.

He also said that due to the non-exemption of loans there was misunderstanding between the banks and the member loanees while blaming the banks for not following the guidelines of the "Complete Waiver of All Loans for Marginal Farmers and Small Farmers (upto 5 acres)" highlighted in Budget 2008-09.

He further said that the JAC had put up an application to the chief minister on January 7, 2009 to seek appointment but there was no response till now, one month and four days later, which showed the negligence of the state government on the matter of the loanee farmers.

He also stated that like the Maharashtra government exempting the loans, the Manipur government could also give a package of Rs. 200 to 300 crores for the interest on the loanee farmers.
