Over 280 non-Manipuri labourers lodged at Imphal building

Imphal , June 14 As many as 288 non- Manipuri migrant labourers from across the state have been lodged at a building here in the wake of the killing of migrant labourers in the state.

Labourers from different parts of the state, particularly from four valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishenpur have been kept at a&aposDharamsala'(shelter run by voluntary organisation) at the heart of the capital complex here, official sources said here today .

They were being supplied food and other essentials by several social organisations as well as the state government.

As of now, no migrant labourer has decided to leave Manipur in spite of the killings by unidentified gunmen, the sources said, asserting that the government was doing everything possible to protect them.

Security measures were tightened at various places where non- Manipuri labourers were working.

In a related development, several social organisations have urged the state government to find out the root cause of killings of non- Manipuri labourers and to"amend laws, if necessary, to protect identity of Manipuris in view of heavy influx of migrant labourers".

On June 11, four migrant labourers were killed by unidentified gunmen at Central Agricultural University in Iroisemba area. The workers were engaged in construction of a boys&aposhostel.

With the incident, the number of non- Manipuri labourers killed by unidentified gunmen this year has rose to 20.
