Imphal | August 25 : In a welcome development, the ‘Chakka bandh’ of the transporters in Manipur has been suspended immediately after they were given written assurances that their grievances and demands will be looked into by chief minister O.Ibobi Singh and the state transport minister.
The transport organisations in Manipur have been demanding the repairing of the two national highways leading to Manipur and to provide security for the transporters. The transporters have started their agitation in the first week of August. Meanwhile, one suspected militant was shot down in an encounter with 4/8 Gorkha Regiment on Monday at around 3:30 a.m. at a spot between Toupul and Ngaikhong, near Moirang in Bishnupur district.
According to sources, the encounter lasted for about 10 minutes and 4/5 militants are suspected to have escaped from the site of the encounter. One AK 56 rifle loaded with six rounds and 6 empty cases were recovered along with a dead body after the encounter, said the source.
In another unrelated incident, few students were hurt when police lathi-charged them to break up a sit-in protest in front of their schools against the July 23 incident. Higher secondary students of Imphal East district were staging sit-in protests in front of their respective schools when police lathi-charged them to disperse the protest.
