IMPHAL: A Manipur Police constable has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a migrant from Bihar for ransom. The accused, Md Azizur (32) of Yairipok in Thoubal district, is with Imphal West district police.
On January 18, Jitendra Prasad Yadav, a mason from Motihari, was abducted by Azizur and three of his men from the Dharamsala area. Jitendra was going to MLA N Bijoy Singh's house at Khurai.
On Sunday, the MLA said the kidnappers had kept Jitendra inside a room at Hatta Golapati and sought `50,000 for his release. "On learning about the incident, one of the relatives of Jitendra informed me," said the MLA. After negotiating with the abductors, it was agreed that `12, 500 would be handed over to them at a tea stall in the Hatta area. Having agreed with both sides, a relative of Jitendra went there the same afternoon.
The moment Jitendra's abductors came to take the money, the MLA's guards surrounded them and managed to nab three of them. One of them was found to be a policeman. They were handed over to police. Sources said the MLA disclosed the story behind the kidnapping to newsmen after the abductors, following their arrest, accused Jitendra of raping a girl to cover up the crime.
