Core wants probe into custodial death

IMPHAL: The Imphal-based Centre for Organization and Education (Core) on Monday condemned the custodial death of Thokchom Ranjit, a physically challenged person, and demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter.

Ranjit (48) was picked up by Manipur police commandos from his Itam Nungoi village residence in Imphal East district in the wee hours of Sunday; around 10 am, cops informed his family that he passed away at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital here. Six police commandos, including a sub-inspector, have been placed under suspension in connection with the incident.

The irate locals, who formed a joint action committee to protest against the incident, alleged the police tortured Ranjit to death in their custody. They demanded termination of the guilty policemen from service.
