Imphal, February 12 : Army bid farewell today to the soldier of 2nd Assam Regiment Thangsuan Lal who was among 17 killed in the avalanche at Gulmarg in North Kashmir on last February 8 (Monday).
Maj Gen DS Hooda, GOC of 57 Mountain Division led the army officers and troops who were present at the Imphal Airport to receive the dead body at 1.30 pm.
Columns of Assam Rifles, Indian Army and Assam Regiment offered last gun salute to the lifeless body of the soldier covered by tri-colour Indian national flag.
The slain soldier was survived by his wife and two minor children- one six year old son and a year old daughter.
Twenty-five year old wife of the slain soldier Chinglulian his father Goukhokam Lal, brothers and well wishers of the slain soldiers also present at the airport to receive the dead bodies.
He was posting at Hyderabad and taking part in a special training there at a army training centre when the ill-fated incident occurred.
According to the wife of the slain soldier, she had last meeting with her husband in September.
GOC, DS Hooda said that Thangsuan was a brave Manipuri soldier of Indian Army.
Killing such a brave soldier in such a ill-fated incident is a great loser of the Indian Army.
He also expressed shared to the sorrow and shocks suffered by the family of the late soldier.
After offering floral tributes, the dead body was taken to his native village, Lamka Veng at Churachandpur district headquarters for performing the last rites.
The soldier, mention may be made, was among the 17 soldiers of the 2nd Assam Regiment who died in dreaded avalanche which also left many other soldiers with serious injuries.
Thangsuan Lal succumbed to his injuries at a hospital at Kashmir on the same day.
