Imphal, May 15 : The son of a professor of Central Agriculture University has been kidnapped by militants for a huge ransom at Iroisemba in Manipur's Imphal West district, police said here today.
Militants abducted Roshan, 20-year-old son of professor N Iboton, at gun point yesterday from their house and demanded a ransom of Rs 30 lakhs for his safe release, they said.
Iboton was in charge of construction of some university buildings and the militants demanded five per cent of the construction cost, police said. Efforts were on to trace the whereabouts of Roshan, they added.

MU teachers` body appeals for early solution to crisis
IMPHAL, Feb 16 : In view of the present crisis at the Manipur University, the Manipur University Teachers` Association has appealed to the Manipur University administration and the Manipur University Students` Union to break the impasse and arrive at an amicable solution.
The MUTA also appealed to all the communities and civil societies in Manipur to cooperate in solving the present crisis.
The MUTA further urged the MUSU to arrive at an acceptable stand so that the academic calendar was not hampered in the larger interest of the university community.

Review interview process: MUSU
Imphal, Feb 14 : Alleging that Manipur University authority is working to conduct interview/screening of candidates at a hotel at Imphal after the administrative block of the university has been sealed by students, the Manipur University Students' Union has demanded that the whole interview process should be reviewed again.
Speaking to media persons at its office this afternoon.
MUSU president Ksh Narayan stated that the prohibition on holding DPC will remain until and unless the entire interview/ screening process reviewed.
Maintaining that MUSU would not sit for talks with MU authority before all the wrong doings and gross irregularities of the MU authority are exposed to the public.
Narayan observed that the MU authority has been deceiving the people of Manipur in a big way.
Reminding that advertisements for recruitment of one Physics Professor was published twice in 2006 and 2008, the MUSU president decried the press statement issued by MU PRO which said that the same post was no longer vacant Narayan further alleged that the MU authority, apprehensive about a possible students movement because of their wrong doings, sent call letters in night when DPC has already started.
Revocation of the suspension order of the Finance Officer within a very short period after sus pension only showed that the MU authority is concealing a scandal of several crores of rupees, he alleged.
He said that boycott of the three top functionaries of MU authority will continue.
Until the accused functionaries apologise to the public, there would be any room for talk between MUSU and the MU authority.
The MUSU president said that the scheduled meeting of the MU executive Council on February 15 will not be allowed.
Accusing the Manipur University authority, particularly the Vice Chance llor, the Pro VC and the Registrar, of indulging in gross irregularities, blaiant manipulations and utter irres ponsibility.
MUSU has sought clarification why they should not resign.
Saying that the MUSU is compelled to continue its agitation in protest against the recklessness and gross manipulation of recruitment process and procedures by the top three functionaries of the University, the stu dent body asserted that the manner in which candidates for recruitment of Profes sors and Lecturers were sent away in the eleventh hour proved lack of trans parency and manifested irresponsibility on the part of the MU authority.
To define and document the hideous crimes commit ted by the authority has become the responsibility of MU, it said that authoritarianism should not be the guideline in selecting faculty members.
Asserting that the post ponement/cancellation of DPC for recruitment of Professors and Lecturers was not an instantaneous act, MUSU disclosed that the administrative block of Manipur University is infested with different cases of fraud and forgery.
Even as some officials were suspended when a major scam was about to be exposed just to hoodwink people, the suspended offi cials have been restored to their posts without following any legal or official procedure.
Lamenting that Manipur University is still gripped with corruption, nepotism and favouritism when higher education has undergone a major revolu tion across the globe, MUSU conveyed strong suspicion on the use of dis cretionary power by faculty heads It also casts serious doubt on the sincerity of screening committee mem bers in following the official screening procedure for recruitment of various posts of faculty members.
Slating that the MUSU stands for transparency and accountability, it claimed that the present agi tation is in the best interest of the student community.

MUSU refutes, reiterates stand
Imphal, February 13 : Reacting to the statement of the PRO of Manipur University which clarified the reasons for the cancellation of interview for the recruitment of professor in Physics department and the postponement of viva-voce for the recruitment of two professors in Mathematics department, the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) today said that the statement of the PRO lacks raison d'etre.
It may be mentioned that M Saratchandra, PRO of MU had clarified in a statement yesterday that the interview for the recruitment of professor in the University's Physics department has been cancelled due to technical lapses in the department and the interview for the recruitment of two professors in the Mathematics department has been postponed due to shortage of quorum members of the expert team.
Speaking at a press meet today at the MU's Students' Home, the MUSU president Ksh Narayan said that the act of the University's authority in canceling and postponing the scheduled interview date at the eleventh hour lacks basis and foundation while saying that this has been done at the behest of somebody.
Narayan said that the agitation launched by MUSU is not initiated immediately but it is an agitation that has been set off against the corrupt practice of the authorities in supply and contract works of the university since long time.
He charged that the MU Administrative block has been under the control of persons who are educated but have polluted mind.
The impasses here show that the authorities concerned have illegally spent the resources of MU, Narayan alleged while asserting that the agitation of MUSU will continue its agitation till the authorities concerned make clarification over their misdeeds.
