IMPHAL, Jul 05: FOSS 2009, the mega IT Talent Search and LINUX or Free and Open Source Software gathering organized by Linux Manipur, in association with Department of Computer Science, Manipur University (MU) concluded today with more than 300 students and teachers participating from various school across the state including from Arunachal Pradesh and the day began with IT Talent Search examination.
The show was held at Don Bosco School, Chingmeirong and nine children from all nine districts of the state lighted the ceremonial lamp before beginning of the second session.
Roger Ahongshangbam talked about Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). And it was followed by encouraging speeches by O. Ibomcha, the Head of Department, Computer Science Manipur University, Father PX Francis, Principal of Don Bosco School, S. Tejmani, Reader, Manipur University Computer Science Department and Deepak Shijagurumayum the volunteer of Linux Manipur talked about Linux Manipur and its vision.
Father Francis who feel wonderful to see all the excitement amongst the students around FOSS 2009 believe that the FOSS IT talent search will go a long way in creating a benchmark in the growth of IT in the state of Manipur.
In this computer age everybody should know how to operate a computer said Vitoo Oinam who is pursuing his 10th standard from St. Joseph School a participant of today’s talent search.
While K. Hemabati of Moirang and Heman Kavita of Ningthoukhong said “We aspire to become software engineers and came to give the test. We did not expect the seminars and talks would be there, but we are so happy to attend the seminars from which we learn lots. The question aren’t tough and aren’t easy too but it was moderate. So, we want this event to take place every year.”
Rajkumar Panthoiren who also participated in today’s talent search also maintained the seminar has given more awareness about Linux.
FOSS 2009 showcased and demonstrated Linux installation, conducted technical talks of Linux, video clips of interviews of the legends and pioneers of FOSS and technical quiz. Students from Bishnupur, Imphal East and West, Senapati, Tamenglong, Thoubal, Ukhrul, Chandel and Churachandpur participated in the event.
Having successfully organized two chapters of FOSS in the last two years and seeing the overwhelming response not just from the students and their parents, but also from members, inspired individuals who have come forward with donations, business houses that have supported the event in the last two chapters. We are also determining to bring another chapter of FOSS to the people who matter and the realization that there can be no greater joy than assisting and supporting those who needs exposure to IT and FOSS said S. Deepak a volunteer of Linux Manipur who highlighted about Linux Manipur and its vision.
He further noted that Linux Manipur is a virtual organization, whose primary aims is to create and spread awareness for Linux or FOSS in Manipur and the North East. It focuses and seeks to help and guide the students and computer users, share domain knowledge, discuss technical issues etc.

UCM calls for justice
Imphal, June 3 : Asserting that justice is yet to be delivered in the many cases of fake encounters, the United Committee Manipur today said that the killing of L Satish on May 16 by a team of Thoubal police commandos is just another instance of State excesses.
Satish was arrested along with Pebam Gunindro and while the former was killed in a fake encounter, the latter was set free, said United Committee Manipur in a statement today.
To denounce the killing as well as to seek justice a number of NGOs, local clubs and meira paibius had formed a JAC, said United Committee Manipur and added that the cry for justice is still on.
If innocent people are going to be arrested randomly and killed on trumped up charges and in fake encounters, then Manipur will soon be turned into a killing field, predicted United Committee Manipur.
Pebam Gunindro is alive and he has a tale to tell, said UCM and added if the Government really wants to find out the truth, he testimonies can be utilised and urged the Government to do something good for the people.

SPOs lamented over?
Imphal, Feb 16 : Alleging that they have been ignored for long by the state government, the Special Police Officers (SPOs) (armed villagers) of Heirok in Manipur's Thoubal district have threatened to withdraw their status as SPOs and instead form another independent organisation to safeguard their village.
This comes even as the central government has directed the government of Manipur for recruiting more SPOs in the state.
While informing this during a press conference held on Friday at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal the group commander of the SPO C-Company, Thokchom Romen, revealed that SPOs are morally down following the apathy of the state government.
Inspite of many revolts from time to time by the SPOs demanding their rights, including submitting a memorandum to the Union Home Minister, the government is still silent, rued Romen and informed that one of 17 next as the Cabinet approved to the proposal of the Law and Legislative Affairs department's proposal for recommendation to the Governor for summoning the fifth session of the Assembly.
The last seating of the forth session of the ninth Manipur Legislative Assembly, mention may be made, was adjourned on October 10, 2008 and prorogued on November 28, 2008 by the state Governor.
As the recommended session will be the first session of this current year, Governor will address the session, the source said.
Another agenda put up by the state education department relating with the upgradation of a government high school to higher secondary level and three junior high school and provision of assistance incentive to the schools getting first class in class X examination conducted by Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BSEM) were also discussed in the meeting which lasted till late night.
The assistance and incentive will be given under a scheme called Grant of Financial Assistant to schools based on its performance in the HSLCE exam conducted by the BSEM.
The objective of the scheme of the scheme is to motivate the school, teachers and students to perform leading to an overall improvement of the academic scenario in the state.
The scheme which will be implemented by the state education (s) department will be extended to all schools located within the state of Manipur and affiliated to the BSEM irrespective of government, aided or private school, the source said as decided by the Cabinet yesterday.
The rate of financial to be granted per students will be Rs 5000 per students securing marks with 75% and onward and 60% and above but below 75% at the rate of Rs 3000 per student as approved by the Cabinet.
The grant shall be shared between the school management, teaching faculty and the students of the school.
Of the Rs 3000 award to a student, Rs 1000 each will be distributed between the school management, teacher and students.
But, for Rs 5000 award which student securing 75% or above, the student will get Rs 3000 .
The cabinet has also approved to the proposal of upgradation of Somdal NK High School in the remote area of Ukhrul district into higher secondary level apart from converting three junior high schools into high schools .
The schools are Hengbung Junior High School at Saitu Constituency with a strength of 327 students during the academic session 2007-08, Phungkhothang Junion High School in Churachandpur district having 874 students and Kwakta Junior High School having a total strength of 160 students in last year session.
The state Cabinet also approved appointment of 28 posts of lecturers by direct recruitment including 18 posts of lecturers by relaxing ban on direct recruitment.
The said posts to be recruited are above in addition to the 84 posts of lecturers whose requisition has been made.
