Imphal, July 25: Traffic came to a halt along the Senapati stretch of the Imphal-Kohima highway as the Senapati District Students’ Association began their 24-hour bandh at midnight last night.
The bandh was called to protest against the Manipur government’s lackadaisical approach towards repairing National Highway 39.
The Imphal-Kohima national highway, the main supply line for Manipur, has not been repaired in the past five years and is now in a dilapidated condition.
The students’ association is demanding that either the state public works department repair the road soon or hand over the job to the Border Roads Organisation.
It has threatened to impose an indefinite economic blockade along the national highway if the Okram Ibobi Singh government fails to respond positively to their demand even after the bandh.
The All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur, has already imposed an economic blockade along the Imphal-Kohima and Imphal-Jiribam highways since July 15 midnight to demand a clear job reservation policy.
While supply trucks stopped their services after the blockade, passenger buses and taxies continued to ply along the Imphal-Kohima highway.
Today, however, no vehicle plied along the highway in Senapati because of the bandh. Reports reaching here said the bandh was total with banks, offices, educational institutions and market places remaining closed.
This is not the first time that the students’ association has imposed an economic blockade to demand repair of the highway. It had observed a 14-day blockade in November last year, but suspended it after works minister K. Ranjit Singh promised to have the road repaired.
“The road has not been repaired for the past five years. The works minister’s promise proved to be hollow as the condition of the road has not improved even after eight months. If the administration does not wake up to the condition of the road even after the 24-hour bandh, we will impose an economic blockade,” a spokesperson of the association said over phone today.
More than 100 trucks and buses remained stranded at Mao, Manipur’s gate to Nagaland, because of the blockade and the bandh.
The government is providing security escort for supply trucks but the truckers are unwilling to go with them fearing a backlash after the blockade. The truckers also complained that the security escorts were not adequate and the blockade supporters damaged their trucks by pelting stones despite the security.
Sources said the LPG stock at Sekmai bottling plant in Imphal West was alarmingly low after the trucks supplying gas stopped their service. The stock for petrol, kerosene and diesel at the government depot has been reduced to 19 days, 27 days and 18 days respectively.

Free software movement launched with grand show
IMPHAL, Jul 05: FOSS 2009, the mega IT Talent Search and LINUX or Free and Open Source Software gathering organized by Linux Manipur, in association with Department of Computer Science, Manipur University (MU) concluded today with more than 300 students and teachers participating from various school across the state including from Arunachal Pradesh and the day began with IT Talent Search examination.
The show was held at Don Bosco School, Chingmeirong and nine children from all nine districts of the state lighted the ceremonial lamp before beginning of the second session.
Roger Ahongshangbam talked about Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). And it was followed by encouraging speeches by O. Ibomcha, the Head of Department, Computer Science Manipur University, Father PX Francis, Principal of Don Bosco School, S. Tejmani, Reader, Manipur University Computer Science Department and Deepak Shijagurumayum the volunteer of Linux Manipur talked about Linux Manipur and its vision.
Father Francis who feel wonderful to see all the excitement amongst the students around FOSS 2009 believe that the FOSS IT talent search will go a long way in creating a benchmark in the growth of IT in the state of Manipur.
In this computer age everybody should know how to operate a computer said Vitoo Oinam who is pursuing his 10th standard from St. Joseph School a participant of today’s talent search.
While K. Hemabati of Moirang and Heman Kavita of Ningthoukhong said “We aspire to become software engineers and came to give the test. We did not expect the seminars and talks would be there, but we are so happy to attend the seminars from which we learn lots. The question aren’t tough and aren’t easy too but it was moderate. So, we want this event to take place every year.”
Rajkumar Panthoiren who also participated in today’s talent search also maintained the seminar has given more awareness about Linux.
FOSS 2009 showcased and demonstrated Linux installation, conducted technical talks of Linux, video clips of interviews of the legends and pioneers of FOSS and technical quiz. Students from Bishnupur, Imphal East and West, Senapati, Tamenglong, Thoubal, Ukhrul, Chandel and Churachandpur participated in the event.
Having successfully organized two chapters of FOSS in the last two years and seeing the overwhelming response not just from the students and their parents, but also from members, inspired individuals who have come forward with donations, business houses that have supported the event in the last two chapters. We are also determining to bring another chapter of FOSS to the people who matter and the realization that there can be no greater joy than assisting and supporting those who needs exposure to IT and FOSS said S. Deepak a volunteer of Linux Manipur who highlighted about Linux Manipur and its vision.
He further noted that Linux Manipur is a virtual organization, whose primary aims is to create and spread awareness for Linux or FOSS in Manipur and the North East. It focuses and seeks to help and guide the students and computer users, share domain knowledge, discuss technical issues etc.

Quraishi reviews poll preparations in Manipur
Imphal, Apr 10 : Election Commissioner Dr S Y Quraishi arrived here today to oversee poll preparedness in view of the coming Lok Sabha elections.
The Election Commissioner discussed issues related to poll preparedness, communication plans, vulnerabilities mapping, use of helicopters for airlifting, EVMs and security arrangement.
Dr Quraishi made it clear that the candidates should follow the model code of conduct and that actions will be taken against those violating the code.
”The election office will be using helicopters specially in the hill areas of Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Chandel, Churachandpur, Senapati districts.
”About 20,000 state security personnel and 65 companies of Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF) will be deployed on election duty,” he said, adding that security arrangements for the polls had been satisfactory.
The Inner Manipur has 32 Assembly segments with 970 polling stations.
The Assembly segment having highest number of electors is Moirang with 32,699 voters, while the one with lowest numbers of electors is Thanga with 19,842 voters.
In Inner Manipur, a total of 8,26,539 will exercise their franchise.
In Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary constituency there are 28 Assembly segments and 1,223 polling stations.
The Assembly Segment having highest number of electors is Mao with 49,632 voters and the one with lowest number of electors is Tipaimukh (ST) with 17,527 voters.
The total number of voters is 9,09,332 .

NPO reacts, intensifies stir
Imphal, Jan 3 : In response to the warning of the Deputy Commissioner of the district, the Naga People's Organization (NPO), Senapati which has been imposing an indefinite economic blockade along National Highway 39 demanding transfer of the Deputy Commissioner Nidhi Kesherwani, has intensified its stir.
However, 115 goods trucks including 41 oil tankers and 25 LPG carriers, which were stranded at Mao bordering Nagaland owing to the blockade, were escorted to Imphal safely by the police today.
NPO has charged the Deputy Commissioner with misappropriation of fund released for infrastructure development in the hill areas and neglecting developmental works of Senapati disrtict.
The Deputy Commissioner, however, rejected the charges saying that she has been discharging her duty under the prescribed guidelines and all developmental funds are being utilised smoothly.
The tribal body has stepped up its agitation after the lady officer on Monday said that NPO's stir had not led to any major economic blockade and the district administration has taken up enough measures for free flow of vehicles.
She had also warned of taking stern action against any person or organization hampering peace and tranquillity.
'In response to the DC's warning, we have intensified our stir', said NPO general secretary Simon Chawang, adding 'We have fanned out our volunteers belonging to five different Naga communities along NH-39 to effectively implement our economic blockade''.
Charging the lady officer with favouritism and nepotism in picking up her chosen men only in implementation of developmental projects, Chawang said NPO will continue its economic blockade until and unless the DC is removed from Senapati district. Plying of passenger buses, however, is exempted from the purview of the strike, he informed.
Incidentally a truck laden with electrical equipments for Govt Depts was torched by suspected strike supporters on Tuesday night near Makhan village along NH 39, the key supply route of trouble torn Manipur.
Police sources said the front portion of the truck coming towards Imphal was badly burnt.
An FIR case has been registered on the matter and a manhunt is on to pull the arsonists.
Security has also been beefed up along the route following the incident.
The Naga body had relaxed its agitation for three days recently in connection with Christmas celebration.
