Madhu Gurung, president AWWA, Red Shield Division visits Ngos at Churachandpur

IMPHAL, Sep 11 : Madhu Gurung, president, Army Wives’ Welfare Association, Red Shield Division visited Churachandpur from 8 to 9, September 2009. During her stay with 27 Sector Assam Rifles, she went around the CCpur town visiting the NGOs taking care of AIDS patients and providing health care to the needy.

The visit to the NGOs commenced on 8 Septe,ber 9 with the visit to Shalom, Society for HIV/AIDS and Lifeline Operations Manipur, an NGO dealing with HIV prevention, AIDS Care and HIV/AIDS Impact Alleviation.

After being briefed about the activities being conducted by Shalom, she met the patients and provided them a healing touch and presented gifts to the ailing people.

Her genuine concern for the effected people was exhibited when she even presented gifts to the administration of the Shalom so that good care could be taken of the patients.

This was followed by a visit to the District Hospital where she interacted with VC Pao, the District AIDS Officer and appreciated the efforts of Anti Retroviral Therapy Centre.

Thereafter she, also visited an NGO named Love In Action, looking after an orphanage and AIDS victims. Here she was greeted by 150 children who also showed a cultural program. Gurung once again appreciated the good work being done by the NGOs and distributed gifts to the children and presented a rice cooker to the administration so that the children staying in hostel could be benefitted.

In the afternoon, she paid a visit to the internationally renowned MSF, Medecins Sans Frontieres, where once again she was given a detailed brief on the activities being undertaken by the NGO. She also met the patients in the OPD and distributed gifts to them. Gurung highly appreciated the work being done and complimented the staff of MSF.

On 9 September, 20 09 Madhu Gurung attended a function organized by 27 Sector Assam Rifles where she interacted with the Veer Naaris and the families of 27 Sector.

The locals of the Churachandpur town were moved by the gesture of Gurung and hailed the efforts being taken by the Army and the Assam Rifles for the betterment of the society in Manipur.

Medical camp for widows at Churachandpur

IMPHAL, Aug 24 : 3(NH) Battalion Assam Rifles of 27 Sector under HQ IGAR(South) had organized at Widows Welfare Association, Bethal, Churachandpur on 22 Aug 2009. On the request of President, Widows Welfare Association Asia, Churachandpur, the doctors of the Assam Rifles attended to the medical problems of the widows. During the camp, the dental problems of the widows were also attended to by the dentist. Free medicines were given to the patients. The camp started at 9.30 am and continued till 1 pm and treated approx 210-220 patients. All the patients found the camp beneficial and it found mass appreciation among the locals and highlighted the motto of Assam Rifles "Friends of the Hill People" in true sense. Earlier also 27 Sector Assam Rifles had provided assistance to this Organization in the form of Handlooms, solar lanterns and rations, a release said.

Free software movement launched with grand show

IMPHAL, Jul 05: FOSS 2009, the mega IT Talent Search and LINUX or Free and Open Source Software gathering organized by Linux Manipur, in association with Department of Computer Science, Manipur University (MU) concluded today with more than 300 students and teachers participating from various school across the state including from Arunachal Pradesh and the day began with IT Talent Search examination.

The show was held at Don Bosco School, Chingmeirong and nine children from all nine districts of the state lighted the ceremonial lamp before beginning of the second session.

Roger Ahongshangbam talked about Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). And it was followed by encouraging speeches by O. Ibomcha, the Head of Department, Computer Science Manipur University, Father PX Francis, Principal of Don Bosco School, S. Tejmani, Reader, Manipur University Computer Science Department and Deepak Shijagurumayum the volunteer of Linux Manipur talked about Linux Manipur and its vision.

Father Francis who feel wonderful to see all the excitement amongst the students around FOSS 2009 believe that the FOSS IT talent search will go a long way in creating a benchmark in the growth of IT in the state of Manipur.

In this computer age everybody should know how to operate a computer said Vitoo Oinam who is pursuing his 10th standard from St. Joseph School a participant of today’s talent search.

While K. Hemabati of Moirang and Heman Kavita of Ningthoukhong said “We aspire to become software engineers and came to give the test. We did not expect the seminars and talks would be there, but we are so happy to attend the seminars from which we learn lots. The question aren’t tough and aren’t easy too but it was moderate. So, we want this event to take place every year.”

Rajkumar Panthoiren who also participated in today’s talent search also maintained the seminar has given more awareness about Linux.

FOSS 2009 showcased and demonstrated Linux installation, conducted technical talks of Linux, video clips of interviews of the legends and pioneers of FOSS and technical quiz. Students from Bishnupur, Imphal East and West, Senapati, Tamenglong, Thoubal, Ukhrul, Chandel and Churachandpur participated in the event.

Having successfully organized two chapters of FOSS in the last two years and seeing the overwhelming response not just from the students and their parents, but also from members, inspired individuals who have come forward with donations, business houses that have supported the event in the last two chapters. We are also determining to bring another chapter of FOSS to the people who matter and the realization that there can be no greater joy than assisting and supporting those who needs exposure to IT and FOSS said S. Deepak a volunteer of Linux Manipur who highlighted about Linux Manipur and its vision.

He further noted that Linux Manipur is a virtual organization, whose primary aims is to create and spread awareness for Linux or FOSS in Manipur and the North East. It focuses and seeks to help and guide the students and computer users, share domain knowledge, discuss technical issues etc.

Naturopathy Awareness Camp concluded

Imphal, May 20 : The seven days Free Naturopathy Awareness cum Treatment Camp organized by Nature Cure and Yoga Hospital, Kongba Kshetri Leikai under the sponsorship of National Institute of Naturopathy (NIN) Pune at the premises of the Hospital from May 11 has been concluded on May 17 last.

A release of the hospital stated that 30 males and 25 females participated at the camp.

There were Yoga demonstration and practical classes on Naturopathy treatment.

Chief Consultant, Dr K Basanta, MO of District Hospital of Churachandpur, Dr Y Lukhoi, Camp Coordinator of NIN Pune, Dr A Ibotombi, Adhyaksha Bihangam Yoga manipur Branch Dr A Kunjabihari and Chief Consultant of Yoga Dr K Devota took part at the camp as resource persons.

Dr Bijoy Koijam graced the valedictory function as chief guest.

The statement further stated that the aim of the camp was to propagate and to popularize the Naturopathy and Yoga system of treatment among the general health seeker so that people can understand the basic knowledge of Yoga and Naturopathy treatment.

Chronic diseases like Hypertension, Arthritis, Asthma, Gastric trouble and Obesity etc were treated with the help of Yogasan, Pranayama, Hydrotherapy, Massage, indoor treatment and outdoor treatment during the camp.

Pooling Rehearsal held in Manipur

Imphal, April 11 : In relation to the 15th Lok Sabha election, first and second phase rehearsal for all the teams and trainees of polling personnel for Churachandpur District was held today while group Y of teams from 157 to 234 and group Z of teams from 235 to 311 will conduct their polling rehearsal tomorrow from 10 am to 4 pm.

An order of DC/DEO of Churachandpur District stated that appointment orders for various Vidhan Sabha Constituencies should also be taken during the rehearsal and all the polling personnel of the district should also take their Election Duty Certificate from the EDC centre of DC/DEO Churachandpur District within tomorrow noon.

The order also said that there will be no holiday tomorrow even tomorrow is a second Saturday; all official works will be processed.

Quraishi reviews poll preparations in Manipur

Imphal, Apr 10 : Election Commissioner Dr S Y Quraishi arrived here today to oversee poll preparedness in view of the coming Lok Sabha elections.

The Election Commissioner discussed issues related to poll preparedness, communication plans, vulnerabilities mapping, use of helicopters for airlifting, EVMs and security arrangement.

Dr Quraishi made it clear that the candidates should follow the model code of conduct and that actions will be taken against those violating the code.

”The election office will be using helicopters specially in the hill areas of Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Chandel, Churachandpur, Senapati districts.

”About 20,000 state security personnel and 65 companies of Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF) will be deployed on election duty,” he said, adding that security arrangements for the polls had been satisfactory.

The Inner Manipur has 32 Assembly segments with 970 polling stations.

The Assembly segment having highest number of electors is Moirang with 32,699 voters, while the one with lowest numbers of electors is Thanga with 19,842 voters.

In Inner Manipur, a total of 8,26,539 will exercise their franchise.

In Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary constituency there are 28 Assembly segments and 1,223 polling stations.

The Assembly Segment having highest number of electors is Mao with 49,632 voters and the one with lowest number of electors is Tipaimukh (ST) with 17,527 voters.

The total number of voters is 9,09,332 .

Bridge, halls inaugurated

Imphal, February 16 : Information and Public Relations Minister TN Haokip inaugurated Saipum suspension bridge, Saipum community hall and Mualsen community hall at Churachandpur district yesterday.

The suspension bridge and two halls were constructed with the fund from Backward Region Grant Fund (BRGF) under DRDA Churachandpur.

Rs 5 lakh, Rs 6 lakh and Rs 4 lakh were used in the construction of Saipum suspension bridge, Saipum community hall and Mualsen community hall respectively.

Speaking at the occasion, the Minister said that efforts are being made to construct outer ring road of Churachandpur town.

Construction of better of infrastructures and residential areas are the ways of human development, he added.

Rampant human rights violations irked united Manipur body

Imphal : With various human rights violations and atrocities being committed in the state besides at least 3-4 persons reportedly being killed in a day on average, the United NGOs Mission-Manipur (UNM-M) asserted “enough is enough” and also questioned how long the people of Manipur were to suffer due to such heinous crime.

Addressing a press conference on “Violent situation faced by the state people” at the Conference Hall of State Youth Centre, Khuman Lampak in Imphal East Saturday morning, V. Nabakishore, secretary and spokesperson of the UNMM asserted that the human rights violation and atrocities in the state were growing at a high rate with at least 3-4 persons being reportedly killed in a day on average. Nabakishore also informed that there have been 497 cases of death reports in 2008 besides 54 persons reportedly killed for the month of January 2009 alone. The secretary of the UNMM also disclosed that of the 54 killed so far, 41 were suspected underground cadres with four confirmed civilians and nine security personnel.

With such increasing human atrocities, Nabakishore also cited the examples of Miss Lamkhoting Marte, 35, a physically challenged girl who was raped and murdered in the border town Moreh and of the 25 year old girl who was shot dead by suspected militants in an indiscriminate firing during a meeting in Churachandpur. The incident also left three others wounded including a three year old baby, added the secretary.

Stating further that one witnesses or hears about killing of at least 3-4 persons a day on normal day, Nabakishore reminded that these incidents were always followed by allegations and counter allegations among the confronting parties, families of the victims and various civil society organisations. He also reminded of the reported incident wherein personnel of the “Indian forces” in civvies allegedly apprehended a young entrepreneur from his residence and tortured him, however, released him after promising them to pay a sum of Rs. 1.5 lakh as ransom.

Asserting that such actions of the state and non-state actors were horrifying the whole population of the state, the secretary of the UNMM also observed that all such incidents occurred during the encounter operations and that only the suspected undergrounds were killed.

In these regards, the UNMM appealed to both the state and non-state actors to employ alternative strategy by delaying the strategy of killing under suspect and stated that the present situation of encounter was really traumatising the lives of the innocent civilians who are also responsible for the state and their families. The UNMM also appealed to all the political and government leaders, state and non-state actors to deal with the civilians of the state with fair trial while countering the insurgency issue. It also further appealed to the respected leaders to avoid killing and find an alternative strategy to deal the situation

Red Shield plans medical camp in Churachandpur

Imphal, January 22 : Under the aegis of the Red Shield Division, HQs 27 Sector would organise four medical and two dental camps in different parts of Churachandpur district to provide medical aid to needy persons in the far flung areas where health services of the civil administration are not available, said a PRO PIB (DW) statement.

Conveying that medical camps would be held at Parbung and Leizangphai village on January 22 followed by similar programme the next day at Sangaikot village, the statement added that another medical camp will be held in Songdo village of Singhat sub-division.

The dental camps will be held at Parbung and Songdo, it maintained while further adding that 57 Mountain Division is also planning to have one veterinary camp in Singhat sub-division on January 29, 2009 .

Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles will be conducting recruitment rally at Chassad of Ukhrul district from February 2 for all domiciles of manipur to enrol 30 Group C personnel (GD/GD driver) for which the candidates should be in the age group of 18-23 years.
